xihulumy head, your playground: mashiro/lia • g, 3.2k
written for igff however i am well aware that this was for me and me alone! i like to throw people i like together, and the stars aligned so that two of my recent favs have the perfect connection >:)
why i joined
some months back, one of the people behind igff brought the idea up to me and it sounded really fun! the original idea was to use this as a reason to write the majiya sequel to a xiaorina space sweeper au. however when igff dropped proper i was nowhere near finished LMAO. and in the interest of actually finishing instead of dropping out i kept the central ship but had to come up with something new.
writing it was actually quite fun. when i actually started anyway LOL i knew i wanted it to be short and i knew i wanted to complete this one for once but i needed a push. so oomf and i decided starting april 1, we would use sprinto bot to write a little bit everyday. we didn't quite stick to it (my sleep schedule throws a wrench into any attempt at consistency) but the first three sprints actually produced the bulk of the fic! after that was mostly cleaning up and fleshing things out.
mashiro/lia
my love for mashiro is inextricably intertwined with my love for itzy. i liked some itzy songs previously but if it wasn't for mashiro i wouldn't have looked into them more. at the same time, me doing a little searchy search and finding this was pivotal to becoming endeared and eventually biasing shiro.
i'm fascinated by itzy's trajectory. if they won the survival show (actual chance there was nonwithstanding), there would be mashiro but there wouldn't be lia. and then the year later when the group was being formed, there was at one point somi but there wasn't yuna. i can't imagine the lineup as anything other than what it is now, but the ways it could've gone are so interesting
mashiro being besties with 4/5 of itzy is so so so cute, but it of course begs the question: what about the other member? mashiro was in dance group, and lia was obviously vocal, so i wondered how many chances they had to interact with each other. from 2tzy yejisu we know that vocal and dance group have different schedules and their paths didn't cross often. it wouldn't be a stretch to say that would apply for mashiro too
i found out later THEY DID KNOW EACH OTHER. lia actually had the most touching message for mashiro post-finale imo. i don't know why i couldn't find this when i was planning things out but with a little bit of procrastination and unreliable? forgetful? narrator i was able to make it work. or ~allude~ to it. shiro my poor meow meow i took her not remembering yeongyung on gp999 and ghosting lia (intentionally or otherwise) and made it a character trait
the cast
i wanted them to be in a situation where they would be in each other's spaces constantly and consistently, so i was looking at either promotions overlapping or an observational style reality show. singles inferno was my latest fav but i'm not confident in doing something so forwardly romantic. i feel like terrace house and transit love are closer to the feel i want but i haven't seen either LMAO but then i remembered sbs roommate! general premise but with the opportunity for romance... back in the day i was a big fan of the jackji dynamic
in this day and age it's so easy to find out things about people so in the same way one could search up someone before a first date, mashiro strives to learn about lia before meeting her. and it's weird, because she's watching this near-stranger hang out with her besties, but lia is just so charming she can't help but be drawn to her. so she learns about lia before she (re)learns about jisu.
(unbeknownst to her, lia is going through the same thing! she remembers more of the trainee days but there was still distance.. then she watches gp999 and sees this girl her friends are so fond of and finds herself rooting for her the most without realizing. she remembers and hears about shiro unnie, then learns about j02/03 mashiro, and then meets kep1er's co-leader mashiro. if i wrote a part 2 it would be about this lol)
so as roommates, they get to interact with this awkward air of "i know you-- kind of, not really, but i want to!" how much of that actually came through in writing i do not know.. i ended it as early in their blooming relationship as i could because i do not know how to write romance <3
for all the stress writing this gave me, and despite it definitely not being my best work, liashiro is just something so personal to me and i'm glad i could put it out there :)

- park sieun, because i love stayc and she is the clear choice as an ex-jyp trainee. she was in the acting group so i have no idea where she falls in all of this, but if bang chan remembers her surely the girls could too. lia might at least
- mark was a funny. i originally wanted it to be hyuck because that's my government assigned kpop boy but i have no idea how to write him so instead i leaned toward jaemin because reasons (psy-isms) + he popped up frequently in the itzy stuff i read. then mark does this and like. at that point i just had to yknow? they also both lived in toronto at some point! the timelines don't line up but i found that neat
- kep1er show up at the beginning, with xiaoting lingering a bit because i'm trying to manifest xiaoshiro roommates <3 plus i wanted to make a joke about the communal ipad as well as vaguely reference xiaorina lol
